Understanding and Managing Anxiety in Tweens and Teenagers.

May 10, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Disorder

These are challenging, fearful, and transformative times. Over half of all mental ill health starts by age 14 and 75% develops by age 18 (Murphy and Fonagy 2012). Teenagers are particularly vulnerable due to brain changes in adolescence. We know young people’s emotional health has been impacted by the Pandemic. So, let’s use this time to raise Thrivers!.

Thrivers are made– not born. Research shows that children can be taught how to be more optimistic, Anxiety gets in the way of that and so much more.

Thrivers are ready for whatever the world throws at them, even in uncertain times. When you help your child to regulate their emotions, they are more able to problem solve, develop emotional resilience and have healthy relationships.

But how do you do that? Join me to:

Stop the Worry Cycle and help everyone thrive in these uncertain times.

I will share:

  •  How to parent with mindfulness, presence, and Self Compassion (studies show that children of mindfully self-compassionate parents tend to have lower rates of anxiety and depression).
  • How anxiety affects our thoughts, our body responses, (physical feelings), and actions ( behaviour).
  • Some simple neuroscience, the fight, flight, and stress response and the developing teenage brain. ( The ability to self-soothe is not genetically programmed to just ‘happen’ without the right conditions).
  • Tools to help your child calm down, worry less and be more hopeful about the world
  • Understand how you may inadvertently maintain the anxiety and common traps we can all fall into.
  • Red Flags, common anxiety disorders ( OCD and GAD etc)  and when you may need to access further support.
  • Lots of time for questions.

NB. Remember self-control/regulation is a better predictor of academic success than IQ or SAT scores

About Me.

I am a mum and parent just like you too. Being a parent is like weaving an ever-changing, unique, and connected tapestry. We are never sure of the depth of colour of the thread which may make the best pattern or shape. Therefore, we all need support in the daily challenges of parenting.  Like you, I’ve experienced all the joys, ups, downs, and frustrations that go with being a parent.

In addition, I’ve worked as a clinician for 33 years and 31 years in the NHS. Up until two years ago, I worked in CAMHS as a Specialist Clinician. I have extensive experience working across the 0-18 age range, offering assessment and interventions for most mental health disorders and complex emotional behaviour difficulties. The parents and children who let me into their lives during my 31 years have been some of my greatest teachers. I feel honoured by the trust given by parents and children in my work. I know there is ALWAYS something to learn, however, I am happy to share my experiences so far.

Thank you for your talk…it was fantastic and so insightful. It has helped me understand a lot about myself as well as our children.

Your presentation style is really nice and calming! Reassuring to know people like you have done the research on this topic and thought through some great solutions. Thanks for making the effort to do this talk.

Excellent – loved all of your advice.  I will go to your blogs.

Thank you for this, it’s been really hard parenting not just through this pandemic but through this digital age when we’re all faced with so many new things, we don’t have the tools for. It’s been very reassuring thank you.

Something to start with, A safe place meditation exercise that everyone can use now.
